Master Plan Update

Merrimac is updating its town-wide Master Plan for the first time since 2002 . A Master Plan is a long-term plan that lasts for 10 to 15 years. The plan will examine existing conditions in Merrimac across several topic areas such as economic development, transportation, and natural resources, among others. The plan will also include an overarching vision statement and set of goals developed in cooperation with members of the Merrimac community, as well as recommended actions designed to help the Town meet those goals. The public is invited to participate in the yearlong planning process and help shape Merrimac’s future by providing your input.

The November 15, 2023 Community Meeting is the first public event related to this planning process, and will include two major elements:

  • Information session: The consultant team will present an overview of the components of Master Plans, the role a completed plan can play in local decision-making, and what to expect from the planning process.
  • Interactive exercises: An important aspect of any Master Plan is to develop a vision for where the community sees itself in 10 to 15 years, at the end of the plan’s lifespan. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a series of brainstorming activities to identify local priorities and values.

Permitting Process:

The Planning Board is the Department for marijuana permitting in the Town of Merrimac and can assist applicants in obtaining additional information about the applications and procedures below.

  1.  Host Community Agreement – Contact the Select Board to inquire about a Host Community Agreement. If available, you may apply by submitting a one-page summary of the request that includes the Company name, ownership information, proposed location of the facility, description of the building, type of facility and any proof of social equity or economic empowerment applicant status (please see Policy for more details on types of applicants given priority consideration).

  2.  Before requesting a host community agreement with the Town, the Applicant should consider the Town’s zoning requirements to determine whether the proposed location is suitable for the facility. To determine location eligibility, please review the Merrimac Zoning Map and Marijuana Zoning Bylaws.

  3.  If you are awarded an HCA with the Town, you will be required to fill out the following applications, which will require notice to abutters and a public hearing; Application for Special Permit and Application for Site Plan Review.
